Eligibility Criteria

Generalist: qualifying graduation/postgraduation with at least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwBD); Specialist: exact stream-specific degree and professional conditions apply.

The basic age range is 21–30 years as on 1 October 2026. Without relaxation, a candidate must have been born from 2 October 1996 to 1 October 2005, inclusive. The required qualification must also have been obtained by 1 October 2026.

For Generalists, the degree threshold is at least 60%, or 55% for SC/ST/PwBD candidates, in the applicable graduation/postgraduation examination. Specialist requirements vary: for example, Finance requires the stated CA/CMA qualification as well as the required degree; Company Secretaries requires ACS/FCS from ICSI as well as the required degree.

Read the full NICL AO eligibility rules (/exams/nicl-ao/eligibility/) for all eight streams, category relaxations and qualification evidence. A successful form submission is not a confirmation of eligibility.

Age Relaxation

Category Relaxation
Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe 5 years
Other Backward Classes — Non-creamy layer 3 years
PwBD — General / EWS 10 years
PwBD — SC / ST 15 years
PwBD — OBC 13 years
Eligible Ex-servicemen, including the specified ECO / SSCO categories 5 years, subject to the notification’s military-service and release conditions
Defence service personnel disabled in specified hostilities or operations and released as a consequence 3 years
Existing confirmed employees of Public Sector General Insurance Companies, including GIC and Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd. 8 years

The Ex-servicemen clause includes a requirement for at least five years of military service as on 1 October 2026 and specified completion, release or extended-assignment conditions. It is not an automatic concession for every former service member. Read the complete clause if you intend to use it. Official NICL notification, page 4 (https://nationalinsurance.nic.co.in/sites/default/files/2026-10/NICL%20AO%20Recruitment%20Advertisment%202026-27_0.pdf#page=4); Official NICL notification, page 5 (https://nationalinsurance.nic.co.in/sites/default/files/2026-10/NICL%20AO%20Recruitment%20Advertisment%202026-27_0.pdf#page=5).

The notification allows cumulative relaxation when a candidate qualifies under more than one listed category, subject to a maximum age of 45 years. The PwBD rows already state category-specific totals: for example, the listed SC/ST PwBD relaxation is 15 years. Do not add the separate five-year SC/ST concession to that same total again. If another service-based concession may also apply, verify the combination and supporting evidence with NICL. EWS status alone has no separate upper-age concession in the published relaxation table. OBC creamy-layer applicants are not eligible for OBC reservation or the OBC age relaxation. The notification also states that there is no Ex-servicemen reservation in the Officer Cadre, while the specified age concessions remain relevant. Selection Process

Selection has Phase I Prelims, Phase II Mains and an interview. Prelims has 100 marks in 60 minutes. Mains has a 250-mark objective paper in 180 minutes, followed by a 30-mark English descriptive paper in 30 minutes. Descriptive marks are qualifying and are not included in final merit.

The final weighting is 80% for Mains objective performance and 20% for interview performance. Wrong objective answers attract a deduction of one quarter of the assigned marks; unanswered questions have no penalty. NICL decides the qualifying thresholds.

Use the syllabus and exam-pattern page (/exams/nicl-ao/syllabus/) for section-level marks, timings and preparation guidance. The notification does not specify a numeric 2026 qualifying cut-off.
