The professional-knowledge section is for the discipline in which you applied. Do not prepare from a Generalist-only Mains plan if you are a Specialist applicant. The notification does not provide an official list of discipline-specific subtopics.

The descriptive test lasts 30 minutes and is answered in English by typing on a computer. Its marks are qualifying only: they do not count towards interview shortlisting or final merit. NICL evaluates descriptive scripts for candidates who meet the required objective-test thresholds and sets a separate descriptive qualifying threshold.
For preparation, practise typing a complete answer within time, condensing a passage without changing its meaning, and answering comprehension questions from the supplied text. These are study suggestions based on the named tasks; the notification does not give a fixed essay word limit or a list of essay topics.

Negative marking, cut-offs and final merit
- A wrong answer in an objective test loses one quarter of the marks assigned to that question. There is no penalty for an unanswered question.
- NICL sets the required sectional and overall thresholds. There is no verified numeric 2026 cut-off or safe-attempt target in this notification.
- The final Mains-objective/interview weighting is 80:20. Prelims marks and qualifying descriptive marks are not added to that final weighting.
- Where examinations run in multiple sessions, the notification allows score equating. A practice-test raw score is not an official NICL result.
Illustration, not a qualifying prediction: if questions each carry one mark, 40 correct answers and 12 wrong answers give 40 − (12 × 0.25) = 37 corrected marks before any applicable equating. This arithmetic does not establish a cut-off or selection chance.

Suggested preparation topics: editorial checklist
The following checklist translates the official section names into practical study areas. NICL has not endorsed this list, and the list is neither exhaustive nor a guarantee that a topic will appear. Use it to organise revision alongside the official notification and any later information handout.
| Section | Suggested study areas | Useful practice task |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | Reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, grammar and sentence structure, error correction and cloze-style passages | Complete a timed reading-and-language set, then explain every wrong answer |
| Reasoning | Arrangements and puzzles, syllogisms, inequalities, coding/decoding and relationship-based reasoning | Record whether each error came from a missed condition, an inference or time pressure |
| Quantitative Aptitude | Percentages, ratios, averages, profit/loss, interest, time/work, speed/distance and data interpretation | Rework missed questions without a timer before repeating a timed set |
| General Awareness | Relevant current affairs, Indian economy and financial-system basics, and general-insurance terminology | Maintain a dated revision log and verify changing facts from primary sources |
| Computer Knowledge | Hardware/software basics, operating systems, networking, office applications, internet use and basic security concepts | Check that you can distinguish related terms and apply them to examples |
| Professional knowledge: Specialists | Fundamentals of the discipline you applied for; consult its current standard curriculum and professional materials | Build a discipline-specific topic list without labelling it an official NICL syllabus |

How to organise your preparation
- Start with one timed Prelims diagnostic using the official section timing. Classify mistakes as knowledge gaps, method errors or time-management problems.
- Repair weak foundations and then retest. A good study plan should change when your repeated errors change; it need not allocate the same hours to every subject.
- Prepare Mains-only sections alongside Prelims work. Specialists should reserve time for professional knowledge, and all candidates should practise typed descriptive English.
- Use mock results to choose the next revision task. Do not treat a commercial mock-test percentile or predicted cut-off as an official NICL selection forecast.
- Before the examination, read the call letter and official information handout for reporting time, documents and any updated instructions.
Exam-day practical points from the notification
- Bring the valid call letter for the correct date/session, a currently valid original photo ID and a photocopy of that ID.
- Match the name on the application/call letter and identity document. Follow the specified documentary procedure if your name has changed.
- A ration card or learner’s driving licence is not accepted as the specified identity proof for this process.
- The reporting time can be earlier than the test start. Allow for checks and formalities; the 60-minute or 210-minute paper duration is not the whole time you may spend at the venue.
- If you need a permitted scribe or compensatory time, read the applicable notification clauses and complete the required declarations; a standard preparation timetable is not an accommodation rule.

Questions about the syllabus and pattern
Is there a separate official syllabus PDF?
The verified source is the NICL recruitment notification, including the examination pattern. It does not contain a detailed chapter-wise syllabus. Do not mistake a coaching topic list for a separate official syllabus publication.
Does NICL AO Mains include computer knowledge?
Yes. The official Mains tables include Computer Knowledge for both Generalists and Specialists: 50 marks for Generalists and 40 marks for Specialists.
Is letter writing listed for this descriptive test?
The 2026 advertisement lists Essay, Précis and Comprehension, worth 10 marks each. It does not list letter writing in that descriptive-test table.
Is the examination available in Tamil?
The notified objective tests other than English Language are in English and Hindi. The English Language section and descriptive test are in English. Do not assume a Tamil paper from the language used on an information website.
