Detailed eligibility criteria

For NICL AO 2026, the standard age requirement is 21–30 years as on 1 October 2026, with an eligible date of birth from 2 October 1996 to 1 October 2005, both dates inclusive. Specialist applicants must meet their stream-specific degree and professional-qualification requirements. The required qualification must have been passed by 1 October 2026. Official NICL notification, page 3; Official NICL notification, page 4.

Age limit, birth-date window and relaxation

Compare your date of birth with the notification’s inclusive window, using 1 October 2026 as the reference date. For the standard age condition, both 2 October 1996 and 1 October 2005 are included. A birth date outside this window requires careful checking against an applicable upper-age relaxation; upper-age relaxation does not lower the minimum age. Official NICL notification, page 4.

Relaxation in the upper age limit
8 years

The Ex-servicemen clause includes a requirement for at least five years of military service as on 1 October 2026 and specified completion, release or extended-assignment conditions. It is not an automatic concession for every former service member. Read the complete clause if you intend to use it. Official NICL notification, page 4; Official NICL notification, page 5.

How overlapping age concessions should be read

The notification allows cumulative relaxation when a candidate qualifies under more than one listed category, subject to a maximum age of 45 years. The PwBD rows already state category-specific totals: for example, the listed SC/ST PwBD relaxation is 15 years. Do not add the separate five-year SC/ST concession to that same total again. If another service-based concession may also apply, verify the combination and supporting evidence with NICL. Official NICL notification, page 4.

EWS status alone has no separate upper-age concession in the published relaxation table. OBC creamy-layer applicants are not eligible for OBC reservation or the OBC age relaxation. The notification also states that there is no Ex-servicemen reservation in the Officer Cadre, while the specified age concessions remain relevant. Official NICL notification, page 2; Official NICL notification, page 4; Official NICL notification, page 5.

The FreeApplyTools NICL AO age-limit calculator is an independent convenience tool. Its current output has not been validated in this editorial check. Before using a result, check that its reference date is 1 October 2026 and compare it with the official birth-date window and your applicable category rules.

Educational qualifications for all eight streams

For each row below, the notification requires at least 60% marks in the applicable graduation or postgraduate examination, reduced to 55% for SC/ST/PwBD candidates. The degree must be from an eligible recognized university or institute. Where a professional qualification is joined by “and”, both conditions must be satisfied. Official NICL notification, page 3.

Stream: Agriculture

Required qualification
Four-year graduation or postgraduation in Agriculture, Agricultural Biotechnology or Agricultural Engineering.

The Risk Engineers exclusion should be read exactly against the official table. For example, a qualification involving an engineering degree and an automobile diploma may require clarification; this guide does not extend the listed branches or determine equivalence. A BCA by itself is not one of the qualifications listed for Information Technology. Official NICL notification, page 3.

Qualification date, marks and CGPA rules

  • The required qualification must have been passed by 1 October 2026. You must possess the relevant marksheet or degree/provisional certificate, with evidence of when the result was declared.
  • For a result published on a university or institute website, the notification requires a certificate from the appropriate authority confirming the date on which the result was posted.
  • Calculate the aggregate using all subjects in all semesters or years, including honours, optional and additional optional subjects, as the notification specifies.
  • Do not round a shortfall upwards. The notice explicitly treats 59.99% as below 60%. Apply the relevant threshold for your category.
  • If your university awards CGPA or OGPA, obtain its authorized conversion certificate and the resulting percentage. An unofficial internet conversion formula does not meet the stated documentary requirement.
  • The notification refers to recognized Indian universities approved by UGC or recognized Indian institutes approved by AICTE. For an equivalence or recognition question that the table does not resolve, obtain authoritative clarification before relying on the qualification.

Nationality requirements

The notification permits Indian citizens and the following specified categories: subjects of Nepal or Bhutan; Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India; and persons of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India. Official NICL notification, page 2.

Applicants in these categories other than Indian citizens must have a Government of India certificate of eligibility as required by the notification. Do not assume that choosing a nationality option in the form replaces this condition. Official NICL notification, page 2.

Documents to check before claiming a category concession

A valid claim needs the required certificate, the correct category and the applicable dates. Prepare the originals and self-attested copies required for verification; use the prescribed formats included in the official notification. Official NICL notification, page 10; Official NICL notification, page 20.

Claim or situation: SC / ST

Documentary points to verify
Prescribed caste certificate from the competent authority; caste validity certificate wherever applicable.

Claim or situation: OBC — Non-creamy layer

Documentary points to verify
The caste must be in the Central List, and the certificate must include the non-creamy-layer clause. The notice specifies income for FY 2023–24, 2024–25 and 2025–26, and a certificate issued after 31 March 2026. The status/certificate must meet the validity requirement at online registration.

Claim or situation: EWS

Documentary points to verify
Income and Asset Certificate for FY 2025–26, issued after 31 March 2026 and valid for 2026–27. Confirm the full income, family and property conditions in the notification; an income figure by itself is insufficient.

Claim or situation: PwBD reservation

Documentary points to verify
Required disability certificate in the prescribed format, issued on or before the application closing date. The notice specifies at least 40% of a qualifying disability for reservation and asks for the relevant disability certificate and UDID card at verification.

Claim or situation: Scribe or compensatory time

Documentary points to verify
Indicate the requirement while applying and check the separate medical-certificate and undertaking rules. Reservation eligibility and assistance with writing are distinct: the notice also provides conditions for some people with specified disabilities below 40% who have difficulty writing.

Claim or situation: Ex-servicemen / military-service concession

Documentary points to verify
Relevant service, discharge, release, assignment and prescribed proforma evidence for the exact clause claimed.

Claim or situation: Government / public-sector employment

Documentary points to verify
Inform the employer as specified and obtain the required No Objection Certificate for the interview. Check the separate conditions if claiming confirmed public-sector general-insurance employee age relaxation.

Practical eligibility checks before you apply

The examples below are editorial applications of the published criteria. They do not replace NICL’s verification of an individual application.

Your situation: You meet the age condition but your required degree result is declared after 1 October 2026.

What to check
That later result does not satisfy the qualification cutoff. You may still have another already-completed qualification that meets the selected stream’s requirements; assess that route separately.

Your situation: Your graduation aggregate is 59.99% and you need the 60% threshold.

What to check
Do not round it up. Check whether a qualifying postgraduate degree completed by the cutoff independently meets the applicable stream and marks requirements.

Your situation: You are SC/ST/PwBD and your qualifying degree aggregate is at least 55% but below 60%.

What to check
The lower marks threshold may apply, subject to the correct category evidence and all other requirements.

Your situation: You hold a CA/CMA credential but have not completed the additional degree required by the Finance row.

What to check
The Finance entry joins the professional qualification and the degree with AND. The professional credential alone does not satisfy the listed route.

Your situation: You qualify for both a Generalist and a Specialist discipline.

What to check
Choose one discipline. The notification expressly instructs candidates to apply for one discipline only.

Your situation: Your course name or branch does not exactly match a specialist entry.

What to check
Obtain clarification about recognition or equivalence; do not assume that a similar course title makes you eligible.

The degree and date checks above follow Official NICL notification, page 3 and Official NICL notification, page 4. The one-discipline instruction is stated on Official NICL notification, page 21.

Common eligibility questions

Can I apply while studying for a postgraduate degree?

An ongoing postgraduate course does not automatically prevent an application. What matters is whether a qualification you have already passed by 1 October 2026 meets the selected stream’s degree and marks requirements. You cannot rely on a future postgraduate result to cure a current shortfall. Official NICL notification, page 3; Official NICL notification, page 4.

Can I use either graduation or postgraduation marks?

The qualification table allows the required marks in either of the applicable degree examinations. The degree still needs to fit the chosen discipline. For example, Finance and Company Secretaries also require the specified professional credential, while a specialist route cannot be satisfied by an unrelated degree solely because its marks are high. Official NICL notification, page 3.

Does an application number prove that I am eligible?

No. The notification describes admission to the tests as provisional. NICL can cancel candidature if the applicant does not meet the rules or cannot substantiate the information supplied. Keep the original evidence and review all details before completing registration. Official NICL notification, page 2; Official NICL notification, page 20.
