Eligibility Criteria
SSLC / 10th pass
Check eligibility by post, not only by the Group 4 exam name. Several posts prescribe minimum general education at SSLC level, while others require Higher Secondary education, a degree or specified technical qualifications and experience. Typist and Steno-Typist posts can carry separate typewriting, shorthand and computer requirements.
Age limits and concessions depend on the post, community and any eligible special category. Meeting the educational requirement does not establish eligibility for every Group 4 post. Check the prescribed qualification, accepted equivalence, Tamil-language requirements, age rules and post suitability together.
The relevant Group 4 notification contains the recruitment-specific cutoff dates, documents and exceptions. Use its official source when deciding whether to apply. You can find the commission’s notices in the official TNPSC notification listing
Age Relaxation
Age eligibility is determined by the selected post and the applicable category rules. Concessions for eligible reserved communities, persons with disabilities, ex-servicemen and other specified categories are subject to the conditions for that post. A concession available for one post or category should not be assumed to apply to another. Use the notification’s age table and cutoff date to calculate eligibility.
Physical Standards
Physical and medical requirements depend on the post. Candidates appointed to applicable posts must meet the prescribed medical-fitness conditions and provide the required certificates.
Notified forest posts can have additional height, chest, vision and endurance requirements. These requirements and tests do not apply uniformly to all Group 4 posts. Check the physical-standard table and test instructions for the post you intend to select.
Selection Process
The usual Group 4 process begins with a single written examination, followed by scrutiny of eligibility documents and the applicable certificate-verification and counselling stages. Written marks, reservation rules, post eligibility and the notified selection conditions determine consideration for appointment.
There is no interview in the standard Group 4 selection sequence described here. Certain notified posts require additional physical or endurance tests. Special selection provisions, including those for specified reservation categories, must be checked in the relevant notification.
Written examination
Take the prescribed objective OMR paper. The standard ranking route uses written-examination performance subject to the notified qualifying rules.
Onscreen certificate verification
TNPSC scrutinises the uploaded documents of shortlisted candidates to check their claims and eligibility.
Post-specific tests, where applicable
Complete any prescribed physical-standard or endurance tests for the relevant notified posts. This is a conditional stage.
Original certificate verification and counselling
Produce original documents and attend counselling where applicable, following the published shortlist and instructions.
Selection and appointment formalities
Complete the applicable eligibility, medical-fitness and appointment requirements of the selected post. Participation in an earlier stage does not guarantee appointment.
Exam Pattern
The standard Group 4 written examination is a single SSLC-standard objective OMR paper with 200 questions, 300 marks and a duration of 180 minutes. Part A contains 100 Tamil questions, Part B contains 75 General Studies questions, and Part C contains 25 Aptitude and Mental Ability questions.
Part A Tamil is set in Tamil; General Studies and Aptitude are set in Tamil and English. General English is an alternative to Part A only for eligible candidates with disabilities who studied English subject only at Board or University level, subject to the required application details and certificate. The language alternative is not a general choice for all applicants.
Check the scheme in the applicable recruitment notification before preparing. Approved additional-time arrangements follow their own eligibility and documentation conditions.

Salary & Pay Scale
Pay Level
Varies by post and appointing organisation
In-Hand Salary
Take-home pay varies with the selected post, pay scale, admissible allowances and deductions. Refer to the appointing organisation’s applicable pay rules.
Career Growth & Promotions
Group 4 covers posts in different services and organisations, so pay and career progression depend on the appointment received. Use the selected post’s pay scale and service rules when comparing opportunities. Take-home salary depends on admissible allowances and deductions as well as basic pay.
For career planning, check the next eligible post in that service and the rules governing probation, qualifying service, departmental tests, seniority and available vacancies. A common promotion ladder or a guaranteed promotion timeline should not be assumed for every Group 4 appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions
TNPSC Group 4 is the Combined Civil Services Examination–IV conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission for the posts listed in the relevant recruitment notification. It can include administrative, clerical, typing and other roles. The exact post list varies by recruitment.
No. SSLC is the minimum educational requirement for many posts, but others prescribe Higher Secondary education, a degree, technical qualifications or experience. Check the qualification for the exact post; typing, shorthand or computer requirements can apply separately.
No. Minimum and maximum ages depend on the post and applicable category rules. Concessions and exceptions also differ. Calculate your eligibility from the relevant notification’s age table and cutoff date rather than using a single age range for the whole examination.
The standard Group 4 process has a written examination followed by document verification and the applicable counselling and appointment stages, without an interview. Physical-standard and endurance tests apply to certain notified posts, including relevant forest posts, rather than to every candidate.
No. The notified Part A alternative is for eligible candidates with disabilities who studied English subject only at Board or University level, subject to the prescribed application details and disability certificate. Studying through English medium alone does not establish eligibility for the alternative.
No. It is an eligibility-cum-scoring test. Under the standard scheme, Part A carries 150 marks and contributes to the total. Candidates need at least 60 marks in Part A before Parts B and C are evaluated. The overall minimum is 90 out of 300; selection depends on the applicable ranking and recruitment conditions.
No. Group 4 includes posts in different services and organisations. Pay scale, applicable allowances, deductions and promotion rules depend on the selected post. Compare the relevant post’s official pay entry and service rules rather than relying on a single in-hand salary estimate.
Use the applicable official syllabus to identify topics, then practise relevant previous year questions and review weak areas. Check each PDF’s year, subject coverage and booklet identity before timing a full-paper attempt. Score it using a separately verified answer key; a marked question-paper scan is not automatically an official key.
