Understanding your predicted CAT percentile

The estimate is a planning signal, not an official scorecard. Read the range and confidence together, then compare programme-specific overall and sectional criteria.

What the percentile means

It estimates the percentage of test takers whose performance would fall below the entered score under the selected historical calibration.

Whether it is good

A competitive percentile depends on the programme, category, sectional performance and the rest of the candidate profile.

What opportunities it creates

The broad institution bands help prioritize where to research current cut-offs and admissions policies.

Assumptions and limits

Paper difficulty, slot normalization and candidate distribution can move score-percentile relationships every year.

Common mistakes to avoid

Treating percentile as percentage

Percentile is a relative rank measure; it is not the percentage of marks scored.

Ignoring normalization

CAT can scale session performance before official percentile calculation.

Assuming last year’s marks repeat

Difficulty and candidate performance move the score required for a percentile.

Using overall percentile alone

Institutes can apply sectional cut-offs and profile-based shortlisting.

Reading a college band as a guarantee

The listed ranges are research prompts, not admission or interview predictions.

How this calculator works

The predictor interpolates the overall score between score-to-percentile anchor bands configured for the selected exam year. The prediction interval widens below the highest percentiles, where marks and percentile can move less predictably.

Category does not alter the estimated percentile. Its configured offset is used only to place the estimate against broad competitive ranges. Confidence drops when the score is outside calibrated bands or sectional totals differ materially from the overall score.

People also ask

Is this an official CAT percentile?

No. It is an estimate built from historical score-to-percentile bands. Only the CAT scorecard provides an official scaled score and percentile.

Why does the predictor ask for sectional scores?

Sectional scores help check whether the overall entry is internally consistent. IIMs also use sectional percentiles, although this tool does not claim to reproduce official sectional normalisation.

Does category change the predicted percentile?

No. CAT percentile is based on exam performance, not category. Category is used only when showing broad institute competitive ranges because published qualifying thresholds differ by category.

Does a high percentile guarantee an IIM call?

No. Institutes use programme-specific overall and sectional cut-offs plus academics, work experience, diversity and other selection factors. A competitive range is not a call prediction.

Why is the result shown as a range?

Score-percentile relationships change with paper difficulty, candidate performance and slot normalisation. A range communicates that uncertainty more honestly than a single exact estimate.

Research methodology

The team separates official rules from historical estimates, checks each rule against the cited source, records uncertainty explicitly and schedules another review when a new CAT bulletin or score trend becomes available.

  • CAT does not publish a universal raw-score conversion table before results. Historical bands are approximate reconstructions from prior scorecards and reported trends, and can move with exam difficulty and slot normalisation.
